When school is out in Appalachia, whether it is because of summer vacation or whether it is simply the end of a day; dismissal often leaves kids across the country stranded without positive mentors or after school snacks, and many times it means the end of student enrichment. Providing kids with the opportunity to attend summer camp, or get after-school homework help in a safe environment enables kids to grow and learn no matter what time of year or day it is.
Children in Appalachia face a long, dull and most importantly unsupervised summer. Americans Helping Americans® worked in partnership with Community Connection, Cumberland Mountain Outreach, Grandma’s Gift and L.A.M.P ministries to provide children in West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee an opportunity to experience educational and organized athletic activities during the summer. We send 2,000 kids to summer camp for summer 2011.
