If you have been a loyal donor to Americans Helping Americans® for many years, or even if you have just discovered us, it is probably evident that a common thread running through most of our programs is our focus on improving the quality of life in Appalachia by meeting the basic needs of its residents, and working with them to promote a sustainable future.
Our new sewing circle, located in rural Kentucky, has empowered nearly 40 women by providing them with $1000 worth of new sewing machines. Some of these women also hold regular jobs, some do not because they are elderly, or disabled, or cannot afford childcare, but they ALL want to provide for their families and take responsibility for their own needs.
The sewing circle gives them the opportunity to make clothing for themselves and their families at the very least; there are even some who have started selling their blankets, quilts and clothing. Not only have these meetings opened doors for the women financially, they have developed a support system that is truly priceless.
