Volunteering Your Time – Safe Places provides weekly support groups for women and children fleeing domestic violence in an effort to help strengthen their resolve in building healthy relationships and live lives free from violence. Volunteers assist with our children groups and may choose to either help facilitate a group for our older group (ages 7-15) or provide structured play activities for our younger children (ages 6 and under). These groups meet twice each month.
Volunteers must commit to working at least one Monday evening (6:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.) per month March through November. (Groups do not meet during the winter months.) The number of clients and children attending support groups will vary; therefore, volunteers may not be needed every month. All volunteers will be provided with a schedule.

Making meals – Safe Places families meet at a location in Fairfax, VA every other week for life skills education and they always come hungry! Your group can assist these families by preparing a dinner. We have 6 more dates until the end of the year to serve 10 families (40 individuals) a meal.

Adopt A Family – Safe Places families would greatly benefit from additional community support – a friendly face able to provide rides to doctor’s appointments, guidance with resume writing, assistance with job searching and help with maintaining the front yard. Adopting a family requires a one-year commitment.

Due to the nature of the population Safe Places serves, all volunteers must provide a completed application, copy of a valid picture id, a current criminal background check, and proof of a negative TB test. Upon receipt of all documentation, Safe Places’ staff will contact you to schedule an interview. Once an applicant is approved, Safe Places’ staff will coordinate with the applicant to schedule an orientation session and start date.
