It isn’t only the price of gas that has risen in the past few years; grocery inflation has also risen sharply. Families in Appalachia are choosing the least expensive products to feed their family in order to cope with the stress on their tight budgets. This means that many foods, especially meat, become an infrequent luxury to those that need to stretch their income and fatty fillers become a new part of the underprivileged diet.
Americans Helping Americans® works with local organizations to fill in the gaps in diet and provides meat supplements in care packages distributed through volunteers in domestic violence shelters, food banks, and low-income neighborhoods. In addition, Americans Helping Americans® operates and assists warehouses in Kentucky and West Virginia storing food to help families get through difficult times. |
